NUA Guest Blog: The Designers Show

Students currently studying on the BA (Hons) Fashion Communication Programme at Norwich University of the Arts share their experience of Norwich Fashion Week 2017.
Rosie Bragg attended The Designers Show.
With such a wide variety of distinct collections gracefully sent down the runway I have to admit to being very inspired by this years Designer’s Show. The individual soundtrack to each collection created an atmosphere of excitement and as it went on, I was eager to see more.
Here is a selection of the designers from the show who stood out most for me.
First up was Jane Richard’s nature inspired collection. Originally Jane Richard’s is a local Norwich interior designer who has handmade each garment for her collection. I love how she has taken her interior designs and transformed them into garments in such an impactful way, using tropical and nature inspired fabrics to great effect.
Norwich University of the Arts graduate Sophie Georgia Moley brought us a sportswear inspired collection. Colour blocked oranges and reds where used throughout the collection, highlighted with hints of black and silver. The silver silk sweater matched with a pair of black silk tracksuit bottoms really caught my eye, with fantastic craftsmanship on show.
Lisa Bambridge of Stoned and Hammered presented her amazing jewellery making skills through large dramatic pieces. Taking inspiration from Norfolk land and seascapes, her vision truly came to life through her collection which included tribal jewellery and prayer beads.
My favourite collection of the show would have to be Becci Ball’s inspiring designs. The use of holographic translucent material paired with black was brilliant. Bralets, mini skirts and bodycon dresses were all designed with a offbeat clubbing spirit in mind.
The collaborative collection between Van Dal and competion winner Emily Leason took on a fresh nautical 50’s theme, models wore white three quarter length trousers with blue and red striped T-shirts holding the winning patterned shoe designs.
Lily Moore’s collection brought us amazing ruffles and netting layered together across multiple cotton skirts, shorts and cropped tops. Each look gave us a different colour – radiant and luminous.
BA Hons Textile design student (University of Derby) Gemma Hyde designed a collection of beautiful Chinese inspired headpieces. Each headpiece was hand woven, some small and delicate – others large and angled, each one looked like a work of art.
Overall, the show was a triumph. Each designer impressed the audience with their own unique individuality and style. The show was slick, running quickly and efficiently – I will be looking forward to what the designers for next year have to offer!
